Discover the beautiful landscapes and charming towns of Belgium as you travel by bike and barge between Bruges and Brussels. Explore the magical town of Bruges, famous for its small channels, museums and picture postcard buildings. The cycling itinerary takes you to the North Sea and the seaside resort Blankenberge, and to medieval towns including Ghent and Antwerp. There is time to visit the market squares en route, and sample the local waffles, chocolate and beer. Cruise in comfort on the small barge, along beautiful and winding rivers and channels.

Itinerary

Day 01: Board boat in Bruges
The MS Mecklenburg, your floating hotel for the week, will await your arrival in the port of Bruges. Embarkation is between 3pm and 5pm, when the crew will welcome you on board. Take some time to discover Bruges – the ‘Venice of the North’ – widely known for its art and museums. Bruges’ old town, with its number of Grachten (small channels), is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Enjoy the bustle of activity around the Grote Markt (the big market place) while having a waffle, coffee or traditional Belgian beer. Dinner on board with the opportunity to meet your fellow cyclists. Overnight Bruges (for 2 nights).

Day 02: Round cycle from Bruges to the North Sea (55km / 34mi)
Our first cycle day takes us to Damme, Bruges’ former outer harbour which has a picturesque Market where you can see the statue of the poet, Jacob van Maerlant. Continue to the sea where sandy beaches and cafés abound. There is time to relax and perhaps take a swim before returning to Bruges.

Day 03: Bike to Ghent (Merelbeke), explore the old town on foot (40km / 25mi)
During breakfast the barge will cruise to Moerebrugge, where our cycle stage begins. Today we’ll follow the Gent-Oostende-Canal through the wide Flemish plain to Ghent. The barge will dock for the night at the lock in Merelbeke, a suburb of Ghent approx. 30min by bike from the city centre. After dinner, you can venture into Ghent and explore its old town alleys and quaint cobble stoned streets. In the Middle Ages, Ghent was the second largest city in Europe after Paris and its architectural wealth is well preserved. Overnight Merelbeke.

Day 04: Cycle to Dendermonde, by boat to Sint Amands (48km / 30mi)
Today we’ll cycle to Dendermonde, where you can enjoy a coffee break at the wonderful Grote Markt. In the evening the barge continues to Sint Amands, one of the most beautiful and winding parts of the route on the river Schelde. Overnight Sint Amands.

Day 05: Cycle to Antwerp (42km / 26mi)
From Sint Amands, we will cycle past the water tower and cross the Brussels-Rupel canal. We’ll continue through an historic area where bricks have been produced since the Middle Ages, then alongside the river Rupel to the river Schelde. From Rupelmonde it’s a comfortable ride to Hemiksem, then we again follow the river Schelde to Antwerp. The world’s centre of diamond-processing, Antwerp offers a number of interesting sights including its richly decorated town hall, the historic Grote Markt, the huge Liebfrauen Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle. Overnight in Antwerp.

Day 06: Cycle via Lier to Willebroek (45km / 28mi)
Following breakfast on board we will start our cycling, passing through suburban Antwerp via Lier along the river Nete to Willebroek, where the barge will be docked. Optional beer tasting on board subject to minimum numbers – additional payment applies locally. Overnight Willebroek.

Day 07: Bike to Mechelen and Vilvoorde, cruise to Brussels (40km / 25mi)
While the barge travels through the Willebroek canal, our last cycle day takes us through green, sometimes hilly landscapes to Mechelen and Vilvoorde. Mechelen has a remarkable density of more than 300 listed buildings (classified as historical monuments) including eight churches, all built within an area of only three square kilometres. From Vilvoorde we cruise to Brussels. Not only home of the sprout, Brussels has a magical town square (Grote Markt), interesting museums and some of the best waffles in the world. Enjoy wandering around the old town and sights including the Gothic town hall, the beautiful guild houses and the “Männeken Pis”. Overnight Brussels.

Day 08: Depart Brussels
Departure transfer to airport for flight back to home.

Starting in Belgium’s capital city of Brussels, you would be excused if you were to add a few extra nights on to do a city break here before the cycling starts to discover the variety of monuments, historic sites and architecture as well as shopping arcades, parks, gardens, art galleries and museums. Discover why Brussels is famous for its food, comic strips as well as the world-famous Manneken Pis statue, the Atomium and the amazing Grande Place.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive in Brussels
Arrive early and head for the Grande Place, the Manneken Pis or one of many other landmarks in this delightful city where culture vultures, shopaholics, gourmets and gourmands all feel at home. Stay at the NH Brussels Grand Place Arenberg with breakfast.

Day 02: Brussels to Mechelen
After one last tour of the Grande Place, leave Brussels behind and cycle through the suburbs to Grimbergen, known for its lovely abbey church, a baroque basilica. Ride on tree-lined country lanes, along a river and through meadows to Mechelen, home of the 13th century St Rumbold’s Cathedral and its tower with 360-degree views of the city. Stay at the Mercure Hotel Vé with breakfast.

Day 03: Mechelen to Antwerp
On today’s route, enjoy the successful blend of Art Nouveau, neo-Gothic, neo-Empire and Art Deco at the Ursuline Institue of Our Lady of Wavre. Here, the winter garden is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau, an ode to nature, springtime and light! Continue through the countryside to Duffel on the River Nete, Mortsel and Berchem. Visit the island Fort in Mortsel (one of eight Brialmont Forts that made up the defensive line of Antwerp). Discover Antwerp, a city with a long tradition with beer as well as antiques and curios, vintage fashion and diamonds. Stay at the Hampton Antwerp with breakfast.

Day 04: Antwerp to Dendermonde
Follow the River Scheldt for most of the route today. Visit 10th century Wissekerk Castle, another of Antwerp’s fortifications. Further along the river, cross by ferry, then continue atop the river dike to De Zilverreiger, a regional museum focused on preserving knowledge about local trades and crafts that once flourished: basket weaving, river fishery, cooperage (barrel making), flax processing and clog making. Stay at the Abalona B&B with breakfast.

Day 05: Dendermonde to Ghent
Today’s route continues on the Scheldt river banks, cycling past a string of Flemish villages and towns. Laarne Castle is a great place for a break before continuing to Ghent. The Old Town of Ghent is like an open-air museum. It is also a UNESCO Creative City of Music. The music scene here is thriving. Festivals, musical institutions, the carillon, concerts, students of music having a sing-song on the quays… music is everywhere. After dark the ambiance is magical, thanks to the town’s ingenious street lighting. Stay at the Europahotel with breakfast.

Day 06: Ghent to Maldegem
Head west and discover the rural Meetjesland region, a cycling paradise with woods, meadowland and vast cropfields. It is easy pedalling through the flat landscape to Eeklo, a small town known for its many sculptures. Then continue through the Het Leen and Drongengoed woods. In the evening, put your feet up in Maldegem. Stay at the Amaryllis Hotel with breakfast.

Day 07: Maldegem to Bruges
Yet another lovely route through the flat Flemish countryside. After Maldegem, pass through some quiet villages including Knesselare, Maria-Aalter and Moerbrugge. On the last stretch, follow the Ghent-Bruges canal. It dates back to the 14th century and is one of the oldest in the country and together with its towpath verges, it forms a green corridor that is important for biodiversity. Your final destination of Bruges is a truly charming town with its cobbled streets and squares, canals, medieval-looking buildings and a fairytale ambiance. Stay at the Hotel Velotel with breakfast.

Day 08: Depart Bruges
Final departure transfer to airport for flight back to home.

After Breakfast, We begin our visit with a short stroll in the old city centre. An experienced guide provides information about the world-famous Grand Place with its unique city hall and splendid guild houses. We continue our adventure through the capital by coach. We pass by the magnificent St. Michaels cathedral, the Congress Column, the Heizel district with the renowned Atomium, the remarkable Chinese pavilion and the Japanese tower. We drive back to the centre via the Palace of Laken and visit Zavel district with its many antique stores. After the impressive Court of Justice and the elegant Louiza Square, we drive to the stately Place Royale, the Royal Palace and the old Palace of the Nations which is now the home of Parliament. Around the corner, the heart of Europe beats: the buildings of the Commission, the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament Buildings.
