Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Port au Prince
Meet on arrival into Toussaint Louverture Intl. airport on the outskirts of Port au Prince and taken to the hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02: In Port au Prince
Today we will then do an Historic City Tour including:

The old Gingerbread houses, dating from over 120 years
Champ de Mars, the Heroes’ square
An overview of the history of this tiny fighting island
Statues of the Heroes
The damaged Catholic Cathedral, St. Trinity’s Episcopalian and the loss of its native art murals, plus the National Palace
Visit to the Historic Pantheon museum

Afterwards a visit to Atis Rezistans, a group of artists who make wonderful and unusual pieces of art/sculpture out of things they find on the street. A uniquely Haitian experience.

On the Gulf of Gonâve, Haiti’s capital city has a long and chequered history. Founded as a base for French pirates, the city has suffered an almost endless catalogue of natural and civil upheavals, culminating in the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck the city on January 12, 2010, killing over 200,000 people. The city is beginning to re-emerge from the rubble though and rebuild many of the buildings destroyed. The National Palace, once one of the city’s most impressive landmarks has now been replaced again by one of the largest parks in the country, the Champs-de-Mer. In the streets and in Marche de fer (Iron Market) you can find life going on as it has for generations, with vendors selling everything from voodoo paraphernalia and masks, to tea sets and coconut belts, with artists making amazing art of of everything. Port au Prince is a microcosm of Haiti and provides a fascinating insight into the resilience and spirit of the Haitian people.

Day 03: Hiking in La Visite National Park to Seguin
Up early to travel by car to the end of the “Road” at Furcy for the start of your hike to the Auberge at Seguin. You will be walking through La Visite National Park, accompanied by a guide. When you arrive at the Auberge you will have lunch, a chance to look around and unwind and talk to the Auberge owner about the Forest and surroundings.

Day 04: Hiking in La Visite National Park to Jacmel
Next morning after breakfast hike down to Peridot, near Jacmel where you will be met by our local driver to take you to our beach hotel just outside of Jacmel for some rest and recovery from our amazing hike over the mountains. This is the start of our Jacmel Carnival weekend. A welcome Rhum or fruit punch will be offered at the Cyvadier Plage hotel on arrival. Included tonight is a buffet dinner plus a musical group.

Day 05: In & around Jacmel
Today you will enjoy a visit to Bassins Bleu, the lovely waterfalls, just outside Jacmel and then come back for lunch, followed by a Jacmel city tour with our local guide. Enjoy an included buffet dinner with the Xaragua Folklore Dance group.

Occupying traditional heartland of the Taino Indians, Jacmel was the old capital of the southeastern part of French Saint-Dominigue. Originally developed to boost sugar production from the outlying plantations, the town went on to become a major trading centre for coffee. Today the old historic part of Jacmel is still filled with wonderfully preserved examples of 19th century French colonial architecture and these mansions influenced the shotgun shacks famed today in the old French Quarter of New Orleans. With a vibrant and thriving arts scene, Jacmel is the undisputed handicraft centre of Haiti with murals scattered around the town plus many shops selling handicrafts, papier-mâché masks and carved wooden animals. Jacmel is also home to internationally renowned film and music festivals and was also the birthplace of two of Haiti’s most influential artists, the poet René Déspestre and the artist Prefétè Duffaut, whose stunning murals graced the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port au Prince.

Day 06: Drive to Port Au Prince
Drive to Port au Prince in the morning to the airport for your flight home.

Day 01: Port-au-Prince
Today is arrival day, so there are no planned activities until the evening welcome meeting. Day 02: Port-au-Prince
Enjoy an included city tour focusing on the history, unique culture and vibrant local arts scene. See the devastating effects of the 2010 earthquake alongside colourful arts, crafts and traditional goods at the artist community of Atis Rezistans, where, out of the rubble, artists began to create new life, spawning an entire community. Visit the Iron Market (Marché en Fer) for artifacts related to the traditional Vodou (Voodoo) culture in Haiti.Meet a Vodou priest and find beautiful metal art treasures in the fascinating iron-working community of Noailles at Croix-des-Bouquets. Day 03: Port-au-Prince/Cap-Haitien
Fly to Cap-Haïtien, on the northern coast. Visit the famous Citadelle Laferrière and the sugarcane fields. Learn to make famous Haitian rum with a “guildive”. Day 04: Cap-Haitien
Explore the city on foot to learn more about the area. With free time in the afternoon, opt to visit the beach on this northern shore. Enjoy learning how to make traditional kasav (a flat bread), a food of the native Taino people. The experience includes visiting a traditional facility where manyok (yucca) is transformed into kasav, which is eaten with meals as a flatbread. Day 05: Cap-Haitien/Jacmel
Fly back to Port-au-Prince and continue to Jacmel. This town is known for its vibrant art scene, carnival celebrations, and sandy beaches. Take a city tour focused on the art community here. Pop into artists’ studios to view the local papier mâché creations and wander past colourful mosaics on every wall. Day 06: Jacmel
Visit the most famous attraction in the area, Bassin-Bleu. This is a series of waterfalls and pools in the hills above Jacmel. The water is turquoise blue due to the minerals in the rocks. After a fun ride and a hike down hill, arrive at the pools and dive in! Day 07: Jacmel/Port-au-Prince
Visit a local grassroots project, the G Adventures-supported Art Creation Foundation for Children.
