Iceland is a vast, evocative country, constantly evolving and changing through the sheer power of the geological forces that created it. There is a huge amount to see outside of the better known tourist spots of the south. We do of course see these, including Geysir, Thingvellir and Gullfoss, and get to understand why they are so popular! Our journey however continues, to explore areas less frequented by the average visitor. The starkly beautiful Icelandic coastline, the immense glaciers and the beauty of the Eastern Fjords are just some of the treasures that await, to say nothing of the almost indescribable geology of the north. Choose between the frozen landscape of the winter, when we see the sun rise and set every day and have the chance of Northern Lights, and the seemingly endless days of summer with 24hr daylight. It’s no surprise so many blockbusters and TV series are filmed here, as dramatic landscapes go, this takes some beating.

Day 01: Arrive Reykjavik
Our trip begins in Reykjavik with a short briefing at the hotel.

Day 02: Reykjavik – Thingvellir
Visit Thingvellir volcanic rift, Geysir waterspouts and Gullfoss Waterfall; to Hella. Today we drive inland to the Thingvellir World Heritage Area, where the world’s first ‘democratic parliament’ meeting took place – the area became Iceland’s first National Park in 1928 and a World Heritage area in 2004. Sitting right on top of a major fault line it is the best place in Iceland to see the continental drift – the movement of the Eurasion and North American tectonic plates. Here they are literally pulling the earth apart as they inch away from each other causing the land between to subside. Not surprisingly the area abounds with waterfalls, immense fissures and the largest lake in the country. We then carry on to see the world famous geysers. The most reliable eruption comes every 5-10 minutes from one called ‘Strokkur’; the 30-metre jet of water and steam is spectacular. To round off the day we drive a short distance on to Gullfoss, a huge dramatic waterfall located in a 70m deep canyon of River Hvita (White River).

Day 03: Across southern Iceland towards the Eyafjallajokull Volcano Ice Cap

Across southern Iceland towards the Eyafjallajokull Volcano Ice Cap, visiting Kvernufoss and Skogafoss Waterfalls plus sea-cliffs, famous for puffins and on to the beautiful Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

We head east to the foot of the infamous Eyjafjallajokull Ice Cap; this area was heavily affected by ash fall during the eruption of 2010 and a great deal of ice was melted by the boiling lava. The glacier feeds many beautiful waterfalls and we visit two of them: Skogarfoss and Kvernufoss. Both have rushing water dropping 60m, and in the case of Skogafoss, this wall of water rushes down in a 25m wide sheet, providing quite a spectacle. Continuing east, we cross the black flood-plain of Solheimasandur, before reaching the green valley of Myrdalur and continuing to Dyrholaey. This dramatic 120-metre high promontory is the southernmost point in Iceland. It is rich in birdlife, and a nesting site for Puffins and Arctic terns in spring. If we are lucky we might see whales and seals from the promontory on calm days. We continue further east to Vik, Iceland’s southernmost town, a great place from which to see the Reynisdrangar needles. Then it is further across Myrdalssandur flood plain and then Skeydararsandur flood plain. Both created by the countless floods created by volcanic eruptions over time. We head for Vatnajokull NP with Europe’s largest ice cap, Vatnajokull and it further on to the famous Glacier Lagoon at Jokulsarlon where thousands of icebergs are separating from the country’s largest glacier and are floating in the pale green sea-level lagoon. We take a walk beside the lagoon for excellent views and if conditions allow can head down to the black sand beach where chunks of ice are washed back up onto the shore by the sea, creating some wonderful shapes and formations. We then continue further east with the steep mountains of Vatnajokull on one side and the exposed south coast on the other, to our accommodation

Day 04: Today we explore the beautiful east of Iceland
A day of scenic driving, with a number of stops as we travel through fjord country. This stunning mountain region has been sculpted as much by glaciers as volcanic activity. The spectacular road winds from one fjord to another, passing a few farms in each fjord where there is enough flat land for hayfields. The birdlife is rich and in late summer thousands of moulting whooper swans feed in the sheltered lagoon of Alftafjordur (Swan fjord). We then continue to the town of Egilsstadir

Day 05: In and around Myvatn
Studlagil Canyon, Saenautasel farm, Dettifoss Waterfall and the volcanic Myvatn area. In and around Myvatn, DettifossHeading inland and west we pass through the starkly contrasting desert scenery of the North East Highlands and follow the track that takes us north to Jokuldalur valley and to Studlagil Canyon, one of the most beautiful canyon of Columnar basalt in Iceland. Then its on to Saenautasel farmstead short distance away. Saenautasel was left abandoned due to have ashfall shortly after the volcano Askja erupted in 1875. From Saenautasel we drive enroute Modrudalur to the enormous Dettifoss Waterfall. This is Europe’s most powerful waterfall, bizarrely set in an arid area of sand and rock formations. Our journey then takes us on to the Krafla volcano area to explore the craters and lava from the eruptive period of 1975-1984. We hike into one of the craters and look at the strange textures of cooled magma splatters and rich colours of the mineral deposits. From Krafla we head for our hotel at Lake Myvatn.

Day 06: Lake Myvatn, Hverfell, Godafoss, Akureyri
In and around AkureyriWe spend the day around lake Myvatn and go for a short walk in the lava fields and craters. We start at Dimmuborgir, a vast area of lava towers and natural arches. The most spectacular of them is ‘the Church’, a large vault resembling a church. Only a short distance from Dimmuborgir is Mt.Hverfjall, a huge circular crater with a depth of 140 metres and 1000 metres in diameter. It is one of the most beautiful craters in Iceland, one which erupted some 2500 years ago and covered the Myvatn area in tephra (fragments of volcanic rock). It is also thought to be one of the largest on the planet. We traverse Mt.Hverfjall, and a little further north is the rift crevasse Grjotagja with its crystal clear warm water. We explore the pseudo craters of Skutustadir. After Myvatn we head to the Godafoss Waterfall en route to Akureyri.

Day 07: Siglufjordur, Hofsos, Borgarvirki, Kolufljufur Canyon
A free morning in Akureyri. Akureyri is a town of some 17,000 inhabitants and is the biggest town outside the capital. It is the cultural, commercial and educational centre for northern Iceland and is 60 km south of the Arctic Circle. Whale watching tours depart regularly and there are a number of museums, including an ‘Into the Arctic’ exhibition. Opened in 2017 this offers everything from information on arctic explorers to ancient charts and maps, navigational equipment and information on arctic wildlife. This northerly town is also remarkably green and has the northernmost botanical garden in the world. The Lutheran church in Akureyri is an interesting visit, featuring a stained-glass window above the altar that has its origins in England. As with most towns in Iceland there are also thermal baths, enjoyed as much by the locals as by visitors, and if you just fancy a wander, there are plenty of interesting shops, coffee shops and even ice cream parlours. If you don’t want to relax and explore town then an optional whale watching tour is possible in the morning. We leave Akureyri and drive around the Troll Peninsula, via few fishing villages on the peninsula. We stop at the magnificent outdoor swimming pool at the village Hofsos and go for a quick dip. This remote geothermal swimming pool has some of the best views in the country over the Skagafjordur bay. We head further south and stop at Borgarvirki, an old Viking fortress. The Citadel is a columnar basalt fortress and a volcanic plug. A little further south we head into Vididalur valley and make a short stop at beautiful waterfalls in Kolugljufur canyon, named after a giantess, once said to live in the area. From Koluglufur we head for our hotel close by.

Day 08: Snaefellsness Peninsula, vikings and Stykkisholmur
Today we drive west to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Along the way we visit a reconstructed Viking house once home to Eirik the Red and his son Leif Eiriksson – the two most famous travelling Vikings. The ‘Eirikstadir’ gives an interesting insight to way of life for the early settlers and an introduction to the historic tradition of the ‘Icelandic Sagas’. From Eiríksstaðir we head for the village Stykkisholmur on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Snaefellsnes is perhaps best known for the Stratovolcano ‘Snaefellsjokull’. Jules Verne, in his classic ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’, describes this as the start point for the characters’ descent. New Age followers consider this area to be one of the earth’s seven major energy centres. We head to our accommodation, located on the southern side of the peninsula, on the beach with great views over Snaefellsjokull.

Day 09: Follow the Snaefellsness coast before starting back for Reykjavik
The exposed coast of the of Snaefellsnes peninsula is the goal for today, and this area has recently been designated a National Park. We visit the old church at Budir, one of the most picture tic on in the country. Sea cliffs at Arnarstapi swarming with birds, to the rocks of Djupalonssandur and the sites of old shipwrecks in the black basaltic sand. Our guide will tell us about the old cod-fishing methods from open boats in the bountiful seas and towering above us is the volcano – Snaefellsjokull. Some of the best fisheries are of the peninsula and whales can often be seen from shore on calm days. We pass through fishing villages on the peninsula and head to one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland Mt. Kirkjufell. After kirkjufell we start heading back to the capital.

Day 10: Our trip ends in Reykjavik after breakfast.
Our trip ends in Reykjavik after breakfast. Flybus transfers are available to the airport.

(It is called “Iceland,” after all.) Spend the first five days doing really cool things like hiking glaciers, exploring Þingvellir National Park, reflecting on life under the Northern Lights, and warming up in hot springs. Then spend two days on your own exploring colourful, cool Reykjavík and end off the journey at the famous Blue Lagoon. See another side of this amazing country.

From late September to April, chase the elusive Northern Lights painting the sky with vivid swirls of color. During winter, we’ll swap out the glacier hiking for a natural ice cave visit. On our way through East Iceland, we might spot some reindeer roaming around in their natural habitat.

Arrival Reykjavik, meet-assist at airport & transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02: Reykjavík City Sightseeing
Building your own exciting itinerary from the possibilities on offer in the City of Reykjavík is easy!
Walking Laugavegur and Skólavorðustígur is a great way to capture the essence of Reykjavík, both are amazing shopping streets. Browse in shops, often the tiniest places sell the more unusual items, relax in a charming café then wander some more. You will come across local crafts, the iconic tall white Hallgrímskirkja church, its design is inspired by Svartifoss waterfall at Skaftafell. For a grandstand view over the city go to the top of the tower, it is well worth it!

There are a few fabulous museums, covering everything from history and the building of the Icelandic nation at the National Museum to photography at the Reyjavík Museum of Photography, or Icelandic culture at the Culture House. If you love art, there are quite a few galleries including the National Gallery of Iceland, Reykjavík Art Museum and Kjarvalstaðir.

Rekjavík’s thermal swimming pools are open early and into the evening. The largest open air pool, Laugardalslaug, has great hot tubs where you can relax with the locals and tourists. All year round outdoor bathing is very big in Iceland! There are a few other pools close to the city center, all have hot tubs.

Day 03: Golden Circle And South Coast
We visit Þingvellir National Park, an incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site with huge geological, historical and cultural significance. The historic Icelandic Parliament was founded here in 930 CE/AD, called the Alþing, this is the oldest still existing democratic parliament in the world. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates continue to move apart, runs right through Þingvellir. You will see the rugged plate-edge of the gorge, this must have been a really dramatic backdrop to the ancient parliamentary sessions! Your next stop is at the Geysir geothermally active area, home to Great Geysir, the famous spouting hot spring which gave us the English word ‘geyser’. You will witness Strokkur, the most active hot spring in recent times, blasting powerful torrents of superheated water every 5 to 10 minutes. Steaming fumaroles and hot springs can also be seen around the area. The final Golden Circle attraction before we head along the south coast is the thundering Gullfoss waterfall. Gullfoss means ‘Golden Falls’, you will see golden-toned mists rising around the waterfall as the mighty Hvítá river crashes through two drops of 11 m and 21 m. Hvítá means ‘White River’, this raging glacial torrent originates at Langjökull, the second biggest glacier in Iceland.

Day 04: Vík – Skaftafell – Glacier Lagoon – Höfn
Our first stop today is at Reynisfjara black sand beach. A walk along the beach will bring you to the extremely impressive and unusual basalt column cave. You will also see the troll-like and atmospheric Reynisdrangar peaks rising just off-shore. Now to the glaciers!

We travel through some extraordinary landscapes and other-worldly scenery on the way to Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. You will see views of the stunning Mýrdalsjökull glacier, home to one of the most feared volcanoes of all, the notorious Katla. You will also see another great fire maestro, Eyjafjalljökull. Our journey will take us over the Eldhraun lava field to Skaftafell, a lush green oasis in the midst of black volcanic sand areas. Skaftafell is quite sheltered with flourishing vegetation and birch forests.

Our specialist glacier guide will lead you on a three-hour glacier hike, giving you the opportunity to explore a stunning glacier tongue of Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe. You will learn all about this sensational blue/white ice world.

From November to March, we explore Vatnajökull’s crystal ice caves instead of the glacier hike. Each winter, new ice caves form and freeze through the heart of the glacier. Walk through with your guide to see ice caps from a whole new angle!

We continue with the theme of ice, onwards to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, action scenes from James Bond and other movies have made this the most famous ice lagoon in the world. Feast your eyes on the jaw-droppingly beautiful iceberg filled lagoon and visit the fabulous Diamond Beach. This coal-black beach glitters with shimmering blue/white icebergs washed ashore by the tide, these opalescent forms are extraordinary shapes. You will feel as though you have stepped through a magic doorway into a mystical ice realm with magic landscapes.

Day 05: East Fjords – Djúpivogur – Egilsstaðir
Today we head to Iceland´s sensational East Fjords. You will travel the narrow roads which thread their way between the mountains and the ocean, passing through the very remote peninsular of Hvalnes. Continuing onwards you will see the really dramatic and contrasting scenery around Lón, the Þvottárskriður landslides and Álftafjarðar, a really beautiful fjord.

We’ll stop at Djúpivogur, a small traditional fishing village. The friendly village community is known for its eco-conscious and welcoming ways. Take a look at Eggin í Gleðivík (The Eggs of Merry Bay), a splendid outdoor sculpture.

At our next stop we’ll enjoy an exhilarating three-hour hike to Hengifoss, the second highest waterfall in Iceland (128 m). Then marvel at the towering Litlanesfoss Waterfall framed by giant hexagonal basalt columns. You’ll pass by a sensational gorge where ash layers left by ancient volcanic eruptions can be clearly seen.

Our final stop is at the Iceland Wilderness Center or Óbyggðasetrið. Named the “best museum in the whole world” by Cosmopolitan Magazine, the center museum exhibit tells the history of the past inhabitants. The center is run by historian Arna, and Icelandic movie set designer Denni, who designed every detail of the building in the original 19th-century style. We’ll enjoy refreshments of coffee/tea and waffles during our visit.

Day 06: Dettifoss – Mývatn – Godafoss – Akureyri
Today we will explore North Iceland. Our journey from Egilsstaðir will take us through the wilderness area around Möðrudalur, the highest inhabited place in Iceland at 469 m, this farming community now hosts the highest coffee house in the land.

Our first destination is Dettifoss waterfall, these falls have the most powerful flow rate in Europe. Believe us, this roaring torrent is truly awesome – you really will feel humbled by the power of Icelandic nature. Your next attraction, the mystical landscapes around Lake Mývatn, has an altogether different character.

The scenery will keep getting more surreal! We are heading to the steaming lunar landscapes and bubbling technicolor mud pots at the Námaskarð geothermal area. The steaming fumaroles and sizzling hot springs waft clouds of steam across these other-worldly vistas. There are more extraordinary scenes to come when we take you to see the Hverfjall crater and the unbelievable Dimmuborgir lava formations, known as the Dark Castles!

Now for some relaxation! Mývatn Nature Baths, the Icelandic name for these baths is Jarðbóðin – unsurprisingly, the hot water comes straight up out of the earth. Bathe in the mineral-rich alkaline water (36 – 40 C), the entrance fee can be paid when booking or on site. Bathing is an optional extra activity but we highly recommend you book it beforehand to reserve your spot! Otherwise, you could take a stroll to enjoy the wonderful views and take a break in the cafeteria. Goðafoss, a dreamy crescent-shaped waterfall, is our last stop before we continue to Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in Iceland, rimmed by high mountains.

Day 07: Whale Watching In Dalvík – Siglufjörður -Tröllaskagi – Laugarbakki
Sometimes we can fit in a short stop at the Capital of the North, Akureyri. Our journey will always take us through this beautiful little town in the midst of the mountains close to the apex of the mesmerizing Eyjafjörður Fjord (the Island Fjord). We are heading for the absolutely charming and still traditional fishing town of Dalvík, with its busy working harbor and fabulous views over Eyjafjörður and Hrísey Island.

The dramatic high mountains, home to some of the best ski slopes in Iceland will be at your back. Your three-hour whale watching boat trip starts at Dalvík harbor. You will skim over Eyjafjörður, going in whichever direction is best to see humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, and occasionally even blue whales.

These tours are really successful when it comes to spotting whales, they are seen on 98% of tours.
Next on the agenda is a drive to Siglufjörður, a beautiful fishing village with an incredible history. This town was overtaken by a Klondike-like gold rush atmosphere in the early 20th century when the tiny and isolated community became known as the herring fishing capital of the Atlantic.

Traveling around Tröllaskagi (the Troll Peninsula) you will see stunning ocean scenery and incredibly steep mountains. Your visit to Siglufjörður will give you a fabulous insight into how life was lived in tiny and isolated Icelandic villages. On the way to your hotel for the night, you will pass through the farming heartland of Iceland, this is also a big horse farming area.

Day 01: Arrive Reykjavik
In and around Reykjavik, Vik
Hallo! Welcome to Iceland. The world’s northernmost capital of Reykjavik lies just below the Arctic Circle. The city sees around four hours of sunlight a day in winter and 22 hours or more in summer. Surrounded by volcanic peaks and crystalline ocean, and boasting a vibrant arts and nightlife scene, Reykjavik’s contrasts are utterly beguiling. Why not arrive early and head to the National Museum, which depicts the history of Iceland from the 9th century, when the first Vikings from mainland Scandinavia arrived and settled, to the present day, or join locals who gossip and chatter in the Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool.

Day 02: Golden Circle / Hvolsvollur Area
Depart Reykjavik early this morning and follow the route of the ‘Golden Circle’. Visit Þingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland’s first parliament, founded in AD930, and a geological wonder where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. If you notice a big ridge of water in the landscape, you’re probably looking at the Silfra fissure. Next, head to Iceland’s Geysir geothermal area, where you’ll see the Strokkur geyser shoot water 30 metres into the air. Be spellbound by the immense beauty and sheer power of the Gullfoss Waterfall, also know as Golden Falls, before continuing on to the Hvolsvollur Valley, where you’ll spend the night on an Icelandic farm that has been converted into a guesthouse. Far away from the city lights, the guesthouse is an ideal Northern Lights base. If the skies are clear tonight, why not take a stroll out into the snow and look skywards for the dancing green lights.

Day 03: South Coast / Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
In and around Jokulsarlon
Start the day with a trip to the eerily beautiful Skógafoss waterfall, one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. Skógafoss is a giant of a waterfall, 25 metres wide and also dropping down 60 metres. You can get up close and feel its power, and also climb a (long) windy set of stairs up to a stunning viewpoint. On a sunny day you should be able to spot a rainbow or two in the spray. Continue along Iceland’s South Shore to take in more of the country’s renowned natural wonders. From the stepping-stone rock formations of Reynisdrangar, the promontory of Dyrhólaey, and the night black sand beach of Reynisfjara, this is one of the country’s most scenic regions. En route you will pass the lava of the Laki eruption of 1782 to 1783. In the afternoon, you will visit the famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a stunning sea of floating icebergs whose blue contrast with the charcoal coloured sand of the beach. Stop for the night at a farm stay on the South Coast. Weather permitting, there will be another opportunity to step outside and witness the natural wonders of the Northern Lights tonight.

Day 04: Vatnajokull Glacier / Vik
Today you’ll take a walk on Europe’s biggest ice cap – Vatnajokull – which has around 30 glaciers flowing out from it. No experience is necessary to partake in the hike. It’s sobering to think that the glacier is retreating due to rising world temperatures, and in some years the glacier may be gone. Alternatively, if you would like to opt out, just embark on a hike to the glacier’s tongue or return to the glacier lagoon at Jokulsarlon or Fjallsarlon. If you prefer a relaxing morning you can explore the surroundings of the farmstay and head to the Thorbergur Centre. Later on today, journey on to the black sand seaside town of Vik. With the sea on one side and high cliffs on the other, this dramatically positioned quaint little village is Iceland’s most southerly mainland settlement.

Day 05: Reykjavik
This morning we make our way to the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss, and then back to Reykjavik. Upon arrival take a short guided walk of Reykjavik to get an enhanced appreciation of the city around its landmark attractions and points of interest. Visit the old harbour, the city center and the famous Hallgrimskirkja church. Iceland’s capital has an eclectic arts and music scene, an abundance of quirky cafes and a laid-back vibe. Perhaps browse some of the city’s great art galleries. If you haven’t had enough of the Northern Lights yet, you could head out of town to chase them again this evening, or while away the hours with a soak in the geothermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. Whatever you choose, tonight perhaps gather together your fellow Icelandic adventurers and celebrate the end of this Northern Lights Escape.

Day 06: Depart Reykjavik
Today is departure day and time to say ‘sjaumst’. As there are no activities planned, you are able to depart the hotel at any time. Check out time is at midday. If you are departing later, you can arrange to store your luggage at the hotel. If you would like to stay longer, we are happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). Perhaps browse some of the city’s great art galleries. If you feel like something more active, book yourself on a Silfra Fissure snorkelling adventure, where you’ll discover this underwater ridge with water visibility of up to 120 metres.
