Day 01: Arrival Faleolo (Apia)
At Faleolo (Apia) Airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02: Savaii
After getting your bike fitted, ride the 3kms to the ferry terminal. The crossing takes a little over an hour and then it is a 19km ride to Lano. The road meanders beside the lagoon and is a delightful introduction to village life. Your arms will get tired from waving to the kids and calling out “bye-bye” as you pass. Along the way there are several good swimming spots on beaches and in fresh water pools.

Day 03: Ride to Manase
Look forward to a 32km ride on mostly flat roads. The middle section of the ride is through a jungle corridor before winding over the lava fields. There is time to inspect the LMS church with a metre of lava on the floor from the 1905 eruption. Relax at the Manase fales, where again the water laps within a few metres of your feet.

Day 04: Over the hill
This is the big ride day. Although it is only 40kms to Vaisala, the 500 metres of climb can get a bit warm, so start early. If you stay with the van there is no compulsion to ride the hills, just throw your bike in the van and enjoy the company of your support crew.

The ride starts with a gentle meander through seaside villages before gradually heading inland and climbing through forest to avoid the lava cliffs. There are now two lava tube cave tour locations along the way offering the opportunity to see the swiftlets pretending to be bats as they echo-locate to their nests as well as a chance to admire the geology of the caves. The road climbs steadily to 200m before heading across the lava fields in a series of undulations* and down to Asau.

Day 05: Explore Asau
Snorkel at the beach at Vaisala, Kayak to the island from Va-I-Moana, Visit the cocoa factory where Whittakers get their Samoa ingredients or just laze on the beach and relax at the bar.

Day 06: To the western edge of the world
This is a gentle 20km ride to Falealupo with a number of attractions along the way: climb a giant banyan tree, realise the power of cyclones at the church (ruined in 1990) and hear stories about surviving cyclones at the House of Rock. Falealupo is a beautiful isolated beach at the western edge of the world; the sunsets across the coral sands are memorable and the swimming in the small lagoon refreshing.

Day 07: South coast ride
There are numerous villages on the 40km ride around the coast to Satuiatua. The road winds along the cliff tops and beside beaches through many villages. Stop at Lovers Leap for a nui (drinking coconut) and to admire the view.

Day 08: R&R
Enjoy a day at the beach at Satuiatua. Snorkel, take in the cultural activities or just chill out and look for the whales. There is some surfing available nearby, but this is for experts only as its onto the reef and subject to strong currents at the lagoon entrance. There is no resident surf guide.

Day 09: Blowholes and waterfalls
It’s the last big cycling day and while it’s 45km, the ride is mostly flat and with a lot to see on the way (there is so much to see that some groups elect to take the van for part of this day). The blowholes seem to perform in almost any sea condition and tide but can be huge in a good southerly swell. The waterfalls at Afu Aau are probably the second most visited attraction on Savaii, and for good reason. Set in a shady, leafy valley the pool beneath the falls provides a very refreshing swim for all, with opportunities for the more confident to leap from the surrounding cliffs.

Day 10: Departure
Catch the ferry back to Upolu after an easy 10km ride, wave your sad farewells to this uniquely hospitable country and fly home.

That is the beautiful country of Samoa. Located a few hours from Fiji in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Samoa is home to some of the best tropical experiences on the planet.

Slow travel by bicycle is the best way to explore this beautiful country, as we explore both major islands, Upolu and Savai’i. Along the way, we’ll have the chance to swim and snorkel in the clear blue sea, meet local cacao farmers and inspirational NGOs. We’ll swim in the greatest swimming hole on the planet, To Sua Ocean Trench and get an insight into local life and custom.

Bike fitting and an intro to Savai’i

The meeting point is on Upolu, about 3km from the ferry port at Outdoor Samoa. We’ll meet for 9am and get fitted for our bikes, after having a brief about your upcoming adventure.

From here, we take the midday ferry to Savai’i, grab a snack along the way on the ferry and then ride to Lano (20km). Along the way, there is a great rock pool overlooking the ocean where we can take a bit of a dip to cool down.

Cycling: 20km | easy | +118m / – 120m

Day 02: Lano to Manase:
Church lava ruins, cycling and some snorkeling

The 31km cycle from Lano to Manase brings you to the church ruins from the volcanic eruption of 1905-1911. An early start means you’ll get to Manase by lunch time and make the most of the 2km of white sandy beaches. This is also an excellent place for snorkelling, visiting one of the many resorts and enjoying a well earned beer!

Cycling: 31km | easy | +198 m/-196 m

Day 03: Manase to Vaimoana:
Cave exploring, cycle climbing and snorkelling

This 38km ride starts and finishes by the beach, but in between, you’ll reach heights of 240m. Along the way, stop and check out Pe’ape’a Lava Tube Caves and give yourself a bit of a break. And if at any point, the idea of snorkelling outweighs the cycling, you can always jump in the van to give you more time in the water!

Cycling: 38km | moderate | +432m / – 426m

Day 04: Vaimoana to Falealupo:
The Western pinnacle and the ultimate sunset

The ride is a little shorter than yesterday, but also encompasses a 180m climb over about 4km. What goes up , must come down though and Falealupo boasts the most remote and arguably dramatic scenery of Samoa. Situated on the western tip of Savai’i, you’ll find a sunset painted for postcards, over the coral white beaches and lagoon. Along the way, you can stop by the Canopy walk and view the lush forests from great heights!

Cycling: 20km | moderate | +242m / – 246m

Day 05: Falealupo to Satuiatua:
Traditional umu BBQ feast

The ride out of Falealupo is spectacular! Giant palms align the soft sand road for the first few kilometers, as you listen to the sound of the waves gently crash in along the coast. A couple of short but sharp hills (on bitumen) will get your blood pumping. We’ll get to Satuiatua by lunch. Relax on the beautiful beach, go for a walk or explore the reef and some more tropical snorkelling. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a feast with Uilau, our local guide, and his family. The feast is prepared on a local umu style rock BBQ. It’s an incredible, very local experience!

Cycling: 38km | moderate | +433m / -427m

Day 06: Satuiatua to Florence’s homestay:
Cocoa farms, waterfall swims and blowholes

Shortly after riding out of Satuiatua, we’ll break the day up with a visit to a local cocoa growing family. Through WIBDI, learn how these families use traditional methods to create an incredible style of cocoa from bean all the way to your own hot chocolate! There’s an amazing blowhole that’s on route worth stopping at. Once you arrive at Florence’s place, you can double back about 2km to the Puleia swimming hole for a refreshing waterfall swim.

Cycling: 31km | easy | +206m / – 202m

Day 07: Savai’i to Upolu:
Last cycling day, meet with Brown Girl Woke

The last day on the bikes and we head back to Upolu island via the ferry. Once back on Upolu, we’ll meet up with Doris from Brown Girl Woke.

Doris Tulifau is a survivor, educator, activist and organizer ensuring that there are safe spaces for our future generations to talk about trauma before they deal with it as adults. She founded the Brown Girl Woke, a group that promotes young women and men to empower them on taboo issues happening in the Samoan community especially on domestic violence and sexual abuse. The next two nights are spent at Matareva beach on the south coast of Upolu. After the ferry, the bikes will be dropped back at the office and you’ll be transferred to Matareva by car.

Cycling: 22km | easy | +123m / -123m
Transit: Ferry from Savai’i to Upolu

Day 08: Matareva
To Sua Ocean Trench, Togitogiga Fall

Using Matareva as a base, we’ll explore the best of Upolu. Togitogiga falls and To Sua ocean trench stand out as highlights for the day. To Sua is arguably one of the best swimming holes on the planet. A long ladder down into the trench leads to some of the most beautiful, clearest waters. Take your time, and your camera, as you lay back and enjoy nature at it’s very, very best.

Day 01: Arrive Apia
Talofa! Welcome to Samoa. An arrival transfer is included from Apia’s Faleolo Airport, so keep an eye out for your driver who will present you with a flower ula to wear to get you in the mood for your island getaway.Transfer to your hotel where you can check-in . If you arrive earlier in the day you might like to visit Samoa Cultural Village for a taste of traditional life with workshops on weaving, woodworking, siapo cloth making, traditional tatau, dance, music and more.

Day 02: Apia
Today after breakfast you’ll head out for a full day of exploration, which includes some water activities, so make sure you pack swimwear. This morning you’ll visit Papase’ea sliding rocks, which are naturally formed rock slides into waterholes, which give even the best waterslide theme park a run for their money! On your way to lunch at a local café you’ll have a chance for a spot of shopping with a stop at Mailelani Factory, a sustainable body care company that uses cold-pressed coconut oil and other local ingredients in their products. You’ll have some time to relax on the white sandy beaches of Palolo Deep Marine Reserve, with the option of snorkeling over the vibrant reef, abundant with colourful coral and wildlife. If you have time, you might like to end the day with a visit to Baha’i House of Worship, a beautiful temple set among 20 acres of prayer gardens that contain more than 60 species of native plants, flowers and trees. Or if you need a break from the sun, stop at the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, an unusual yet famous American author who made his home on the island. After heading back to the hotel, Overnight at hotel.

Day 03: Apia – Savai’i
Today you’ll have a more leisurely start and leave the hotel around 10am to make the one-hour drive to the ferry for a midday departure to the other island of Samoa, Savai’i. The trip takes about an hour and a quarter. After disembarking you’ll head straight to the Savai’i Market where you’ll have the opportunity to buy some local snacks, before visit the Afua Auu Waterfalls – a beautiful swimming hole perfect for a dip – and the spectacular Blowholes. From here you’ll drive to your seaside villas, known as fales, on the western end of the island, where you’ll be staying for the next two nights. The villas all have spectacular views of the ocean and a two-course dinner is included each night and breakfasts in the mornings, so all you need to do is sit back and enjoy your stay.

Day 04: Savai’i
Today you’ll visit the Falealupo Peninsula for a half-day guided tour, which includes a canopy tree walk across a jerry-built bridge almost 10 metres above the rainforest floor. After you cross, you’ll have the chance to climb a wooden ladder to a platform up a 230-year-old banyan tree. There are many other attractions in the area including the legendary Moso’s footprint, a depression in the ground that is said to have been made by the giant Moso when he stepped from Fiji to Samoa and the Pulemelei Mound, one of the many famous archaeological star mounds that look like flat-top pyramids and date back thousands of years. After the conclusion of the tour, you’ll head back to your villa for a free afternoon to soak up some sun on the beach.

Day 05: Savai’i – Lalomanu
After breakfast today you’ll wave goodbye to your villa and travel to the other coast of Savai’i via Manase. Beaches around the village of Manase are among the prettiest in Samoa and there’s usually hardly anyone around, so use your stop to scout the beach for sea turtles who may be feeding on the sea grass close to the coast. You’ll continue on your way to visit the Saleaula Lava Fields that were created by the eruption of Mt Matavanu back in 1905 to 1911. Five villages were buried and today you can see preserved ruins of the village, before you catch the 2pm ferry back to Upolu. On arrival back on Upolu you’ll transfer to Lalomanu, where you’ll spend the final two nights of your trip in beachside villas with ocean views.

Day 06: Poutasi Village – Lalomanu
You’ll be welcomed by the High Chiefs at the Meeting House (known as the Fale Fono) before visiting the village Arts Centre and stopping past the traditional umu oven to taste some baked treats. You’ll end the day by taking part in ancient games of Taulafoga (coconut tossing), Tagati’a (spear throwing) with the locals, before being treated to a traditional island fiafia night of feasting, cultural singing and dancing and even a fire show.

Day 07: Lalomanu
Today you’ll be chasing waterfalls, so make sure you’re wearing your swimmers! Weave your way down the coast and visit stunning natural swimming spots, including the Sopoaga waterfalls, To Sua Trench, Vavau Beach and the Togitogiga waterfalls, which is known for being the favourite swimming spot of past Samoan warriors. You can also make stops at other places along the coast if you have time to spare.

Day 08: Depart Lalomanu
Goodbye to Samoa and transfer to the airport for your flight home.
